CSO data shows Ireland’s population growth driven by migration and natural increase
New population data published by the Central Statistics Office shows that Ireland’s recent population growth has been driven by a combination of inward migration and natural increase, rather than migration alone.
The figures indicate that births have continued to outnumber deaths, while immigration has remained elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, emigration remains significant, particularly among younger Irish nationals.
Demographers have warned that selective use of population statistics risks misrepresenting the underlying trends, noting that migration flows fluctuate year to year and are influenced by labour demand, housing availability and global events.
The CSO said population estimates should be interpreted as part of a broader demographic picture rather than as standalone indicators.
